Update at bottom.............I can not stress enough that potential patients should avoid seeing Dr. O'Koon. I regret doing so and have told my referring physician my situation and to stop sending patients here. My surgery was October of 2016. Supposedly for a hernia repair. He insisted on doing an incisional surgery over laparoscopic since I had a bulge "near" the same area. Even though CT scans showed only a slight weakening spot in my abdomen....not a full blown hole. I was in no pain and honestly was only concerned about the bulge. He specifically said this way I wouldn't need to see a plastic surgeon later on. Post surgery there seemed to be a concern with my recovery as he continued to schedule me back every 2 weeks for 2 months with instructions to take 800 mg. motrin and to do heat compresses. The bulge never went away and he and his wife (the nurse) just kept repeating that I was not healed and still inflamed. Finally, he said to see him back in February of 2017 but keep taking the motrin and using heat compresses. In February, I called for an appt. and the receptionist would not make me one, she said I needed to speak to the nurse which is his wife. It took her a few days to return my call and quess what I got? "what's going on?, no need for an appt., just keep taking your motrin and doing heat compresses, it sounds like it's still inflamed". Even though I told her I was now in pain. Time goes by and July rolls around. Still in pain, I see my primary doctor who asked me if I had been back to see Dr, O'Koon since he was the last one to see me regarding this area. This is when I found out the size mesh he used was only 1.7 of an inch. Doesn't sound to me like that would hold back very much. I'm starting to think this was an unnecessary surgery. So I called again for an appt. and the receptionist told me I needed to talk to Stacy, (nurse/wife). Days go by again, a repeat of February, except for this time she was going to request another CT scan without the doctor even seeing me. I told her I had already had one this year along with an MRI that they could review. She seemed to dismiss that and scheduled me another one anyway. When the results came back I got a call from "the nurse" saying everything was fine. I said I just wanted the doctor to see me, he was the last one in there and I want to know what he thinks this bulge is since it is obviously not from the hernia. She said that she would pull my chart and speak with Kevin tonight. I thought are you kidding me, was I gonna be a topic after dinner or before bed? I don't call this professional. She then would get back to me in a couple of days. That did not happen. A week went by so I called the office to speak with her, she was not available, days go by before I got a message left on my answering machine by someone I had never spoke to before. I was so mad that I didn't even listen because I felt she was avoiding me. I picked up the phone, which she answered and read me the report, everything seemed fine and we ended the conversation with her suggesting that maybe it's scare tissue that had built up. Still no appointment to see the actual doctor. Now I am left with a 4 inch scare below my belly button that isn't even centered along with the same bulge that I can hold in my hand it is so big. Wish that I had read his reviews pre-surgery. I now have had to make an appointment with another surgeon to hopefully tell me what this is. Nervous about the whole process and regretting every seeing Dr. O'Koon. Don't do it. CT scans do not tell the truth about hernias...mine have been negative since October 2016th surgery......I have had 3 now and have seen 2 other doctors, trying to be cautious.............told by both it is still a hernia, it was never repaired, one says laparoscopic and he'll take out the mesh that Dr. O'Koon put in before repairing. The other saying incisional and will leave in the mesh. Even though mesh doesn't stick to mesh. I'm left, with what to do? November 14th of 2017. So sad. I hope you are not in my position one day.

  • I had to to have my appendix removed. It was my first time having surgery and I was pretty nervous. Dr. O'Koon and his staff were awesome. The procedure was quick and everyone was super friendly. I went in around noon with pain and symptoms and was home in my bed by 8PM after my surgery. It was as great of an experience as having to have surgery could be.
