  This is IMPORTANT information for anyone considering a BAPTIST (Louisville) affiliated surgeon. While their surgeons may be mostly competent, at least one has long embraced placing pre-op bladder catheters even when NOT necessary! And that ONE procedure ALWAYS RESULTS in a WORSE OUTCOME due to near CERTAIN urethra TRAUMA and increased INFECTION rate. This BAPTIST surgeon was REPRIMANDED by the Ky. Medical Licensure Board (that letter dated 5-29-15) for a LACK of EMPATHY toward patients. In addition, another physician present in the O.R. for that case confirmed that NO catheter was necessary (letter dated 11-25-15). Also a procedural VIOLATION was published on 12-2-16 (see patientmodesty.org) regarding this case. And finally, a physician representing the hospital administration, in a letter dated 12-20-16, acknowledged my valid complaint and DECLARED that the hospital had implemented NEW PROGRAMS to educate, monitor and REDUCE these unnecessary catheter orders . Quite simply, for patients able to fully empty their bladder prior to most ALL short (under 3 hour) surgeries, bladder catheterization is almost NEVER required. But using POOR JUDGEMENT, this BAPTIST surgeon favored the CONVENIENCE at the expense of EXPOSING patients to the KNOWN RISKS and INDIGNITY of unneeded catheterization. As of Feb.2017, BOTH the surgeon and BAPTIST surgical group have CHOSEN to IGNORE these well documented FACTS and have NOT expressed ANY intent to depart from this HIGHLY UNETHICAL ‘cath them all’ practice. So you may want to find a surgeon NOT affiliated with BAPTIST. One willing to follow MODERN surgical ‘no-catheter’ protocols (per National Inst.of Health, nih.gov). Good Luck!
